Spain occupies a distinctive middle ground: personal possession and cultivation for private use are decriminalized, but commercial sale is not legal. The result is the cannabis social club — a private, members-only, non-profit association where adults collectively cultivate and share cannabis.
Clubs are concentrated in Barcelona and operate in a legal grey area shaped by regional court rulings rather than a national retail framework. Membership typically requires an invitation or referral and proof of adult age; consumption is private, never public.
Because clubs are not public retail, the rules differ markedly from a licensed-dispensary market — always confirm a club's standing and membership requirements.
Cannabis clubs are private members' associations, not shops. You must be 18+ (some require 21+), be signed in by an existing member or register in advance, and pay a membership fee. Public advertising of clubs is illegal, so anyone soliciting on the street is not a legitimate route in.
Membership fees and contributions are usually cash in euros.
Consumption is legal only inside the club's private premises. Public consumption carries administrative fines.
