The Complete Edibles Dosing Guide: From Beginner to Experienced
Edibles are the most common source of bad cannabis experiences β almost always because of dosing mistakes. This guide breaks down exactly how much to take and what to expect.
Edibles are one of the fastest-growing cannabis product categories β and also the most frequently associated with uncomfortable experiences. The difference between a perfect edible experience and a miserable one almost always comes down to one thing: dosing. This guide will help you get it right.
Start low, go slow. This isn't just advice β it's the single most important principle in edible consumption. You can always take more. You can never take less.
How Edibles Work (And Why They Hit Different)
When you smoke or vape cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through the lungs and reaches your brain within minutes. Edibles take a completely different route. THC passes through your digestive system, gets metabolized by the liver into 11-hydroxy-THC (a more potent metabolite), and then crosses the blood-brain barrier. This process explains three key differences:
- Delayed onset: 30 minutes to 2 hours (vs. 1-5 minutes for inhalation)
- Longer duration: 4-8 hours (vs. 1-3 hours for inhalation)
- Stronger body effects: 11-hydroxy-THC produces more intense physical sensations
- Individual variation: metabolism, body weight, and tolerance all affect response
11-hydroxy-THC (produced when your liver processes edibles) is estimated to be 1.5-7x more potent than regular THC. This is why edibles can feel dramatically stronger than smoking, even at similar THC amounts.
The Dosing Tiers
Microdose: 1-2.5mg THC
Mild relief from stress and anxiety. Enhanced focus and creativity. No perceptible "high" for most people. Ideal for first-timers, daytime use, and those seeking functional benefits without impairment.
Low Dose: 2.5-5mg THC
Mild euphoria and relaxation. Slightly enhanced sensory perception. Good for social settings and mild recreational use. This is the recommended starting dose for most new consumers.
Standard Dose: 5-15mg THC
Noticeable euphoria and altered perception. Stronger body effects. Impaired coordination. Recommended only for experienced consumers or those with established tolerance.
High Dose: 15-30mg+ THC
Strong euphoria or dysphoria. Significant impairment. Potential for anxiety in some users. Only for consumers with high tolerance.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't re-dose too early β wait at least 2 hours before taking more
- Don't eat edibles on a completely empty stomach (faster absorption = harder to control)
- Don't assume your friend's ideal dose is yours β individual metabolism varies enormously
- Don't combine with alcohol, especially as a beginner
- Don't panic if effects are stronger than expected β find a comfortable space, hydrate, and remember it will pass
CBD can help counteract THC's psychoactive effects. Keep a CBD tincture on hand. Black pepper (chew 2-3 peppercorns) contains caryophyllene, which may also help. Above all: hydrate, find a calm environment, and remind yourself the feeling is temporary.
